The residents approached us with the opportunity to renovate and expand Fabiola, a large scale residential building set in the green surroundings of Sint-Niklaas. This project aims to reconfigure the existing structure while enhancing outdoor spaces. The approach respects the original architectural framework of Fabiola, incorporating contemporary elements to update the building to modern standards of security, functionality, aesthetics, and to meet the evolving needs of its residents.
A forward-looking design strategy underpins the renovation, incorporating energy-efficient systems and sustainable materials to minimize environmental impact while enhancing resident comfort. The outdoor spaces are expanded and redefined to provide areas for communal use, promoting leisure and interaction.
Material choices reflect the surrounding natural context, creating a coherent relationship between the building and its environment. This approach seeks to improve the residents’ experience of their surroundings by fostering a sense of continuity between the building and the green context.
The renovation of Fabiola 5 underscores a commitment to community-focused and safety-driven living. By addressing sustainability, improving safety infrastructure, and ensuring a sensitive approach to the local context, the project enhances the living standards of residents while safeguarding the structure for future generations.
